The Only Place You Have to Live

The other day I was watching a documentary on Warren Buffett, and something he said really stuck with me.

He was speaking to a group of high school students and asked them a question. He said, if I could give you any car you wanted, what would you choose?

Naturally, everybody starts thinking about their dream car.

Then he added the catch.

He said, that car is the only car you will ever own for the rest of your life.

That changes the whole question.

Now it is not about what looks the coolest or what goes the fastest. It becomes about care. Maintenance. Longevity. You would treat that car differently if you knew it had to last your entire life. You would stay on top of the oil changes. You would fix problems early. You would be more careful with it. You would respect it.

Then he made the real point.

You only get one body and one mind, so you need to take care of them.

I love that idea because it is simple, honest, and easy to understand. It is also something I think most of us overlook, especially when we are young.

When we are younger, we tend to think we are invincible. We assume we have time. We tell ourselves we can push things off and make up for it later. We think one bad habit does not matter much. We think one skipped workout, one bad meal, one late night, one stressful season is no big deal.

And maybe by itself, it is not.

But over time, the way we treat ourselves matters.

The habits we build matter.
The way we move matters.
The way we eat matters.
The way we rest matters.
The way we manage stress matters.

It all adds up, and eventually it shows up in how we feel every day.

It shows up in our energy.
It shows up in our mood.
It shows up in our confidence.
It shows up in our strength, our mobility, and our ability to keep doing the things we love.

To me, that is what health is really about.

It is not just about looking a certain way. It is not about punishment. It is not about chasing perfection.

It is about taking care of yourself because this is the only place you have to live.

That idea becomes more real as we get older. You start to realize that quality of life is everything. Feeling strong matters. Being able to move well matters. Having energy matters. Being capable matters. Being confident in your body matters.

That is a big part of why I love boxing and training the way we do at Santa Cruz Boxing.

Yes, boxing teaches you how to punch.
Yes, it can help you get leaner, stronger, and more athletic.
Yes, it can absolutely improve your confidence and self defense.

But on a deeper level, it teaches you to take care of yourself.

It teaches discipline.
It teaches awareness.
It teaches resilience.
It teaches you to move with purpose.
It teaches you that your body is worth investing in.

There is an old saying that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.

The same is true with your health.

The best time to start taking care of yourself was years ago.

The next best time is today.

Not next month. Not when life slows down. Not when everything is easier.

Today.

Because you only get one body.
You only get one mind.
And this is the only place you have to live.
