One of the biggest misconceptions in boxing is that moving backward means you’re losing.
In reality, some of the best counter punchers in history made a career out of taking one small step back.
This week at Santa Cruz Boxing, we’re focusing on the step back counter, specifically the step back check hook and the step back counter cross.
These techniques aren’t about retreating. They’re about creating opportunity.
When an opponent rushes in, their momentum can become their weakness. By taking a small step back, you create just enough space for them to miss or overcommit. Instead of reacting with panic, you respond with timing and precision.
That’s one of the reasons I love teaching boxing.
Every technique has a lesson beyond the punches.
Life has a way of making us feel like we always need to push harder. Work harder. Talk louder. React faster. But sometimes the wisest response isn’t to charge forward—it’s to create a little space.
A step back gives you perspective.
It gives you time to think instead of simply react.
It allows emotions to settle so better decisions can rise to the surface.
Whether it’s a difficult conversation, a stressful day at work, or a challenge at home, creating a little space often leads to a much better outcome than charging straight in.
That’s exactly what we’re practicing this week.
Not just how to throw a check hook or a counter cross, but how to stay composed under pressure. How to recognize opportunity. How to let timing work in your favor instead of fighting against it.
Because boxing isn’t just about learning to punch.
It’s about learning to think.
It’s about building confidence through preparation, discipline through repetition, and resilience through every round.
The techniques we practice in the gym become habits we carry into the rest of our lives.
So this week, don’t think of stepping back as giving ground.
Think of it as creating the space you need to move forward.
We look forward to seeing you in class.
