This week at Santa Cruz Boxing, we’re working on one of my favorite defensive tactics: parrying.
I’ve always liked parrying because there is more strategy to it than simply blocking a punch.
When I’m boxing, I might block a few punches. Catch a few. Parry a few.
I don’t always counter right away.
Sometimes I let my opponent get comfortable. I pay attention to their rhythm and look for patterns. Maybe I even let them think what they’re doing is working.
Then, when they least expect it…
I counter.
Parrying isn’t about meeting force with force. It’s usually a small movement. You redirect the punch, stay composed, and put yourself in a better position.
I think there’s a lesson in that beyond boxing.
I’m a big believer in taking action. Being assertive. Making things happen. I don’t particularly like sitting around hoping life works itself out.
But I’ve also learned that you don’t have to react to everything immediately.
Sometimes the best strategy is to put yourself in a good position and wait.
Pay attention.
Be patient.
And when the opportunity presents itself, act.
That’s what we’ll be working on this week. Yes, we’ll learn the technique of parrying a punch, but more importantly, we’ll work on timing, patience, and turning defense into opportunity.
You may never plan on stepping into a boxing ring.
That’s okay.
There are still plenty of lessons to take with you when you leave the gym.
