This week at Santa Cruz Boxing, we are working on advanced footwork.
Pendulum step. Quarter turn. Dominating angles. Check hook. Tyson shuffle.
It sounds fancy, but the idea is pretty simple.
Don’t just stand in front of what is coming at you.
Move your feet. Create a better angle. See what opens up.
One thing I’ve noticed after years of coaching is that most people want to learn how to punch harder before they learn how to move better. And I understand why. Punches are more obvious. They feel more exciting.
But boxing is not just about throwing punches.
It is about position.
A good angle can make the same punch more effective. A good pivot can get you out of trouble. A small step can change what your opponent sees, what they can hit, and what is available to you.
That is why footwork matters.
The pendulum step teaches rhythm and distance. The quarter turn teaches you how to get off the center line. The check hook teaches you how to punch while creating space. The Tyson shuffle teaches movement, pressure, timing, and balance.
But none of it works if you halfway do it.
You can’t halfway pivot.
You can’t halfway create an angle.
You can’t halfway commit to your footwork and expect it to work.
You either move your feet or you don’t.
And honestly, that is one of the reasons I love boxing. The lessons are pretty honest.
If you stay in front of the problem, the problem usually stays right in front of you.
But sometimes, one step to the side changes everything.
That is true in boxing, and it is true in life.
This week, we are not just throwing punches. We are learning how to move with purpose.
Commit to the angle.
We are in your corner.
